#2 - WHISKY ADVOCATE TOP 20 WHISKIES OF 2017
Glenmorangie Astar Single Malt Scotch 2017 Edition - 52.5%ABV
Whisky Advocate, 94 Points - Glenmorangie Astar returns after a five-year absence. Astar is matured in custom toasted casks made from slow-growing trees on north-facing slopes in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. The barrels harbor bourbon for four years before heading to Glenmorangie. That level of provenance doesn’t come cheap, which is why the original Astar was discontinued in 2012, just four years after its acclaimed appearance. The exquisite Glenmorangie aromas and flavors—floral, with rose hips and orange blossom—are dialed up to new levels of intensity, while the voluptuous and sweet palate exudes harmony and balance.
The Pursuit of Perfection, from the tall peaks of the Missouri Ozarks to the sweeping grandeur of the Highlands of Scotland, Glenmorangie Astar (Scots Gaelic for “journey”) is the story of our quest to design the very best oak casks that will deliver perfection in the final whisky. First released in 2008, the single malt’s long-waited return as a 2017 limited edition brings forth a newfound richness and complexity to its silken depths. 105 proof and non chill-filtered.
Rich aromas of butterscotch and honey are balanced with bright, floral top notes, the freshness of mint, freshly squeezed lemons and a delightful burst of coconut. Smooth and creamy on the palate, as sumptuously sweet crème-brûlée emerges with tropical fruits, apricots and vanilla custard, hazelnuts in soft buttery fudge, then clove, toasted oak and a hint of cooling menthol. Honey and almond mingle with coconut ice and aniseed for an enduring smoothness at the finish.
